    CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television)

Traditional video surveillance cameras — distinct from LPRs because they record continuous video rather than structured plate metadata.

    CCTV vs LPR

CCTV records video of a scene; LPR converts plates to structured, searchable text. CCTV footage is heavy, hard to query, and usually overwritten in days. LPR data is light, instantly searchable, and easy to retain for years. The civil-liberties stakes are much higher for LPR despite the lower-fidelity image, because the data is structured.
